AFM Issues
I have bought a Nissan Maxima VG20ET and now I need an
airflow meter – and, no, Idon’t seem able to buy one... You have had an article on an interceptor but you don’t say whether it would work with a faulty AFM. Any help would be appreciated.

The DFA isn’t intended for use with a dodgy airflow meter – it’s unlikely that using the DFA to change the meter’s voltage output will be a
solution to your problem.
More than Spritely...
In regard to your test of the Mazda3 SP23 ( Mazda3 SP23 Test)... You state that "the 2.3-litre engine delivers spritely
performance – but nothing more".
My girlfriend took her Mazda3 SP23 to a street meet at the
Kwinana Motorplex and ran
a 15.39 ET at
91 mph which, in my books, is a bit more than spritely! In fact, I feel
that it’s very quick for
an NA hatch! Her car is
completely standard apart
from a set of lowered springs and
dark tint. The result has caused a bit of controversy on the OzMazdaClub.com forums and no-one has been able to match the time yet. We also found that throttle response is
noticeably improved
when using 98RON premium unleaded, as opposed to
91 RON regular unleaded.
Keep up the great work!!

Wrong Graph #1
I'm afraid that the graph shown in the "World's Best Intercooler Water Spray, Part 1" is not the right one. It's not from
an Ulka E5 pump, but from
an Ulka E4 pump. I have to admit, I also had trouble
finding the right graph at the Ulka website as all links on their site point to
http://www.ulka.it/eng/e4_gra.htm, but the right page for the E5 graph is
http://www.ulka.it/eng/e5_gra.htm This also means that the pump can indeed deliver over
200cc/minute at 10 Bar (145 psi). The E5 pump can also flow 300cc/min at 8 Bar
(116 psi) and 400cc/min at 4.9 Bar (71 psi), while
the E4 pump can't even come close to that.
Furthermore, the E5
pump is not intended for continuous use but it may run for
one minute and then
be left to cool for
another minute. It
probably won't matter if
combined with the Intelligent Intercooler Water Spray
Controller, but for people
who toggle it manually or with a boost switch, the pump will burn out in a few
minutes.
I'm currently exploring the possibility to replace the coil for a
12 Volt one, so a simple
pulse generator with a FET can pulse it. This means the converter is not needed and the whole unit
takes up a lot less space. If this coil is a little
bigger, it can be used continuously too, without getting too hot. Should I find
such a coil, I'll let you know and also include a schematic of the
simple electronics needed
to pulse the coil.
I hope you can use this info to improve an already very nice article.

Wrong Graph #2
In "World's Best Intercooler Water Spray - Part 1" World's Best Intercooler Water Spray - Part 1 you say you'reusing the Ulka E5EX but show the graph for the
E4, which is quite a different pump. The
correct E5 graph can be found here - E5 graph
Also, regarding
the mounting issue in Part
2, there seems to be some mounting brackets available as seen here -
http://www.ulka.it/eng/access_e.htm It looks like they fit like a collar around outlet and being made of rubber should help with
vibration isolation.

Thanks for pointing out that error. The graph has now been changed.
Not the Most Powerful V8...
I just thought I'd let you know that your article, "The World's Most Powerful V8" should be re-written to acknowledge
the Chev Corvette Z06
which has 376kW and 637Nm
naturally aspirated using
the new SAEJ2723 standard. With 'old' single
cam-in-block, 2 valves per cylinder technology as well! And notice in the picture of the AMG V8 on the dyno - it is running without the power sapping
alternator...

Well spotted – we’ve recently covered this engine at GM's LS7 7-litre V8 and, as you say, it’s a
373kW/657Nm monster!
VDO Pump Install
I bought a Holden VDO
water pump through your site and I didn’t receive any kind of instructions with
it. I want to know how
it should be fitted
- what is the inlet and outlet, what angle
can it be fitted and
does it need to be below
the water source?
Luke
Australia
The VDO pump should be installed so that water is drawn into the end hose
fitting and is expelled through the fitting on the side of the body. As seen in
the pic
Installing an Intercooler Water Spray
it should be mounted at the bottom or below the water source. Any angle should be fine.
VDO Pump Specs
I’m looking for a replacement pump for my
intercooler
water spray system. I am currently using a standard washer
pump.Can you tell me how
the flow rate of the Holden VDO pump compares to a
normal washer pump?

We no longer have any information on the VDO pump but we can tell you it’s
one of the better ones. Whether or not the VDO pump is an improvement depends how
well your current pump performs!
